These succeed:
AGAINST ('+Tales* +from* +Shakespeare*') -- but not IN BOOLEAN MODE
AGAINST ('+Tales* +Shakespeare*' IN BOOLEAN MODE)
AGAINST ('+Tales +from +Shakespeare' IN BOOLEAN MODE)

These match, but do not require 'Shakespeare'
AGAINST ('+Tales* +Shakespeare*')
AGAINST ('Tales from Shakespeare')
AGAINST ('"Tales from Shakespeare"')

I would guess the doc is wrong about from*.
