A guess... The data somehow got stored wrong in utf8.
1. See
http://mysql.rjweb.org/doc.php/charcoll
and do what is suggested for SELECT HEX...
2. How was the data transferred from 5.0 to 5.5?
3. SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'ft%';
4. Are those VARIABLES the same as before?
5. EXPLAIN SELECT ...
