Fulltext Search far too slow

Hi Guyz,

I have got the following problem:

MySQL-table with ~7800000 datasets, tablesize ~10GB.
The table contains articles stored as text.
I would like to have a fast fulltext-search with a query like this:

Query: SELECT ID FROM articles WHERE MATCH (title, abstract) AGAINST ('STRING');

I have created a Fulltext-Index of course. But the search is still painfully slow.
(~30seconds up to several minutes)

Box: P4 2,4 Ghz , RAM: 1GB, HD: 160GB Sams. IDE, OS: Linux

ft_buffer_size=512M

Do you guys have any ideas ? What I am doing wrong ?
