MySQL 5.0 Query Browser

I have installed 5.0 and cant get the query browser to open. I keep getting the 1045 error with access denied @localhost using YES, or NO password. My instructor told us to use localhost as the host and root as the user, I am doing this and I cant get on. Any suggestions. PLEASE, I am so confused. Thanks,Mary
