Problem Running 4.0.20d on Windows XP Pro

I just installed 4.0.20d using the typical installation option in the default directory (c:\mysql). The os is Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 1.

When try run any mysql command, I get:

ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

During the install there is mention of the need for a "my.cnf" file and sample files .cnf files which should be in the install directory. I can't find the sample files, so I have not created a my.cnf file, so that might be the problem.

So, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.
