Max connections and the Linux thread library?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had managed to get more than 600-1200 connections on a Linux box? I find that you start getting errors connecting to the port and eventually it'll just stop responding entirely and hang (This happens around 1100-1200 connections).

This makes it really hard to scale. What would be the proper way to scale in this situation where you need a lot of connections? Load balancers are one option, however any updates would surely corrupt the database.

Any suggestions?
