4.0.20 password issue

Hi, I am new to MySQL. I have completed the install, and I ran winmysqladmin program. I used root for user and gave the account password. This shows up in my.ini file.

If I go to command line and run mysql -u root -p I get asked for password. When I enter it i get an error message telling me that the password doesn't exist for user root.

I then ran the same command line, but when asked to enter password, i entered a carriage return (blank) and got in.

I then ran mysqladmin -u root password xxxxxx and then I get a > sign on next line.

being new to MySQL I am not sure what the program is asking me for.

any help much appreciated

thanks in advance
