I have had the same, too.
You can fix it the following way:
The standard data path looks like <hd>:/mysql/data
The subdirectory contains another subdir called 'mysql'. You must copy this subdir into your new data-dir. If your data-dir in the my.ini file looks like 'd:/mysql/data', after the copy progress there should be a subdir 'd:/mysql/data/mysql' .
After this procedure my system runs 8-)
