Is there a way to have all partitions in the same table file?

I'd like to use innodb_file_per_table for admin reasons, but our db is heavily partitioned and we're a suffering a severe performance hit (>40%) because of the large numbers of files involved.

Is there a way to have all the partitions in the same file, but still use innodb_file_per_table?
