I'm still not sure what the point of adding a username and password were when I first installed mysql. Maybe it was simply to secure winmysqladmin?
I've ditched the anonymous users and added a password to the root users.
I've figured out I use localhost. I'm yet to try using 127.0.0.1 - too scared in case I wreck it :-)
I found a good forum that walked me through these what are basic steps for most people (but daunting for a newbie with absolutely ZERO experience with a comand line let alone mysql). it is:

Part of me wishes there was some sort of GUI for mysql so I wouldn't need to even bother with the command line and typing in the commands. But then I think maybe that is my 'keep 'em stupid' conditioning of years of exposure only to Microsoft products and it's about time I learn't a thing or two ;-)
