Console flooded with "Service could not initialize: unable to set current working directory"

I'm running MySQL on Apple OS X 10.13. The server is working fine and I can access it, but my log is flooded with this message every 10 seconds:

Jun 30 05:37:48 MikeMacPro com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (homebrew.mxcl.mysql[39716]): Service could not initialize: Unable to set current working directory. error = 2: No such file or directory, path = /usr/local/var/mysql: 17G65: xpcproxy + 10944 [1405][B5FFE99F-CD7F-3AD0-8C3B-A06EF069275A]: 0x2

even when I stop MySQL from the preference pane in System Preferences, this keeps coming every 10 seconds. How do I get rid of it?
