I understand the permissions issue, what I don't understand is that I am connected to mysql as root and I still get this error:

TestMach:~# mysql -u root -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 41
Server version: 5.0.51a-24+lenny1 (Debian)

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> CREATE DATABASE `information_schema` DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' to database 'information_schema'

Any ideas? I am new to mysql, but have admin'ed oracle before.
