This solution worked for me with vista.
1) Remove service with 'Mysql Server Instance config wizard' choosing 'Remove Instance'.
2) Uninstall Mysql server.
3) Remove all installation folder
- The standard one (generally C:\Program Files\Mysql\Mysql Server 5.1)
- The program data one (generally C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1)
NB: You can find the exact name and location in my.ini
4) Reinstall Mysql
5) Start 'Mysql Server Instance config wizard' and configure as first installation

For me worked, hope this helps!
