I AM A NEWBIE, MYSQL.EXE CLOSES AFTER I OPEN IT

Hi,
I hope somebody can tell me what I did wrong.

I am running windows xp home edition, I downloaded and installed mysql 4.0.21, I also Copied the file my-small.cnf to the root C: drive and rename it to my.cnf

I opened the Command Prompt and typed C:\mysql\bin>mysqld-nt, it says it does not recognize it.

I attempt to open mysqld.exe, mysqld-opt.exe, mysqld-nt.exe, they all open for a quick second and then shut off.

I dont know what to do from here, again I am very new to this. I hope to find someone that is willing to follow me throught the steps to resolving this.
