Re: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

I had the same problem on SuSE Linux 10.3 using "Server version: 5.0.45 SUSE MySQL RPM".
After following directions for creating a root password, mysql -u root always
gave the access denied error above. After many hours of trying, it turns out
that mysql only prompts for a password if the -p flag is specified, otherwise
it gives the access denied message and fails inspite of the documentation showing
it used without. Very, very frustrating.
