I banged my head for nearly 2 days on this same issue. I've still only managed to find a partial fix. The pref pane doesn't work but I can start & stop MySQL from the command line. I have a hunch the problems are path and permissions related, but the information online is outdated and unclear.

I found it mind blowing that neither MySQL 5.5 nor MySQL 5.1.54 using the 64-bit DMG installers worked for me whatsoever.

I thought I would offer my blog post about it, in case it helps someone in the future.
