Question about 4.1.6.(gamma) installation

I installed mySQL ver 4.1.6. (gamma) essentials on an XP machine and works correctly (for the moment). I tried also to install on a Win98 machine. The first time (with effort I arrived to work). The next day it was not possible to connect to localhost...
I should like to ask if this version works correctly on win98.

Previously, it was installed ver. 4.1.3 with no (big) problem. The reason I want to change, is that the collation does not works correctly with greek characters, (sorting incorrectly), while ver 4.1.6 seems to have repair this problem.

Any help?
