An interesting spin on the access denied error...

I think this might be a new one, here. I installed the newest MySQL distribution that's been fully released (4.0.2 or whatever). I ran winmysqladmin.exe, fed it the root account and password, and whenever I try to run just the standard c:\mysql\bin>mysql with no arguments, I get this error message:
"ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'ODBC@localhost' (Using password: NO)".
I've seen a couple other errors like this posted in the manual or whatever, but never this exact one. I'm currently running Windows XP Home SP2, with Apache 2.0 installed (not that it should matter), and I'm trying to setup MySQL to do PHP development with. I used an older version of MySQL a couple years ago, with XP Home, and never had a problem with it, but now it hates my computer or something. Anyone have a clue as to what I can do to solve this?
