I have tried every suggestion that has been posted here and I have finally got mysql to install and run and all I had to do was install all the IIS packages that come with windows xp pro sp2.
Go to your control panel, add and remove, then to windows components and install all the internet information services packages and every thing works fine after that.
I hope this helps every one out, ive been trying to get mysql to work for days now uninstalling and reinstalling, editing the registry and everything, nothing worked, then just out of curiosity I installed the IIS package and everything has worked out great now. Mysql works fine now.
They should have that information in there installation guide that you need the IIS package installed.
