Basic questions by a newbiie

I'm trying to set up PHProjekt on Windows XP, which of course requires MySQL. So, I install MySQL. Unfortunately, the Windows tutorial mentions using WinMySqlAdmin to configure MySQL. Problem is, somewhere before 4.1 this was apparently abandoned. Using the full install, it won't allow me to install WiinMySQLAdmin, telling me I should use 'MySQL Administration" or something like that. So, how do I access that?

Anyway, I finally found and downloaded Mascon. I actually get it to connect, but ONLY by using the guest account. Using root, and the password I entered during setup, I get nada. Using some of the instructions I found on the Internet, I wasn't even able to change the password. Does MySQL use some default password? Is the password for some account other than root? I've COMPLETELY uninstalled and reinstalled, and still can't connect using the password I give.

I'm guessing this is basic, basic stuff, but I can't find the answers anywhere else. Thanks for your help!
