Problems connecting to Java with new install of mysql 4.1.7

running j2sdk1.4.2_04 desktop applications with mysql 4.1.0-alpha-max server and mysql 4.0.13 client and mysql-connector-java-3.1.0-alpha-bin-jar with no security on root (i.e., password="") on Windows XP Professional running mysqld-nt as a Windows Service everything works just fine.

Now I have tried to upgrade to mysql 4.1.5 (or .7 - take your pick) using the Windows installer download - everything looks OK running mysqlc and dbTools, and whatever else, but my java applications will not (and I've tried every type of configuration I can think of) connect to mysql. Result = Communication Link Failure - Bad Handshake. I have also noticed that using the "telnet localhost 3306" command I get a connection but after a short time it is lost.

Any help will be very much appreciated.
