This ought to be explained in the upgrade procedure. If the installer sets the value in my.ini it's possible to get through the install without hitting this problem, but perversely, the problem will affect a cautious user (like me) who does a "vanilla" install first to confirm that the database engine itself works, then modfies my.ini by hand to redirect to the existing database.
I noticed that the new ib* files are about five times bigger than the old ones. Probably a side effect of the features that improve performance?
