At AskUbuntu this is being diagnosed as a conflict with package(s) installed from dotdeb.org:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/149289/how-to-get-mysql-back-on-ubuntu-12-04

Indeed I had PHP installed from there, but no clear way how to fix it yet.

$ sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list | grep dotdeb.org
# deb php53.dotdeb.org stable all # disabled on upgrade to precise
# deb-src php53.dotdeb.org stable all # disabled on upgrade to precise

$ sudo aptitude search "?installed?origin(dotdeb.org)"

$ sudo aptitude search "?installed?origin(php53.dotdeb.org)"

Any more clues welcome.
