AFAIK there's no appreciable differences in the sources used to build our RPMs as opposed to the sources we make available.

You *might* be able to to get slightly faster binaries building from source if you employ compile-time optimisations specific to your hardware and OS. But our builds are already pretty optimised, so you'd be talking about doing a lot of fine-tuning. I really don't think it's worth your time unless you need a different installation layout or you're unhappy with using the RPMs for some other reason.
