Unfortunately this information applies only to Windows.

1) there is no such file as my.ini in a Linux installation

2) the expected /etc/my.cnf is missing (was never there)

3) creating /etc/my.cnf containing old_passwords has no effect
(after doing a service mysql restart)

This is RHEL4 with MySQL-server-4.0.21-0 and MySQL-client-4.0.21-0 installed from RPMs.

Still no solution to this problem...
