SOLUTION "mysql_connect(): Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

The newer version of MySQL seems to use a new password style, which PHP cannot send. I admit I don't understand the situation but the following mysql command will set an old-style password which PHP can use. I'm also not sure of the security implications

SET PASSWORD FOR 'username'@'localhost' = OLD_PASSWORD('your_password');
