New Installation

I'd like to install MySQL on my RHEL 6 system. I've tried in the past to download and install the Community 5.7 server, but it never starts.

I'm new to installing MySQL, so I guess I should start with some questions:

1) Are there prerequisite packages to installing MySQL?
2) Is installing the packages using the yum repository all that's necessary to get things running?
3) Are there system minimums I have to reach in terms of memory, storage, or processing power?

In essence, where's the real beginning of this process for someone with limited experience in DB administration? I'd just like to get a simple server up and running on my desktop system.

Thanks in advance,

Dale
