Hard to tell what's gone wrong in your installation. If you installed 5.7, study

To suss out your problem, I'd try the whereis cmd as above, and ...

ls -ld /usr/local/mysql*

and ...

alias mysql

A common fix for MySQL path problems on the MAC ...

sudo sh -c 'echo /usr/local/mysql/bin > /etc/paths.d/mysql'

close the terminal, open a new one, enter ...

mysql -uroot -p
