messed up users and passwords can't fix

I have a new installation of MySql. Somehow I have completely screwed up my passwords. sudo mysql denies access to root, so I can't go that route.

Is there any way, short of trying to re-install MySql again ( I find it VERY difficult to get rid of the old version) to wipe out the users and passwords and start that over?
