Problems With MySql Installer on OS X Mojave

I upgraded to Mojave recently, and I tried to install MySql 8 with the installer. I entered a root password, and set the authentication mode to the old method. When I tried to login it would not accept the password, and I am apparently using the new method of authentication.

I tried booting from a disk with the previous operating system, and the installer indicated that the installation would require a bit over a gig of space, as opposed to Mojave's 500 megabytes. The installation also took much longer than the Mojave installation. I entered the root password in the installer, and the older method of authentication. When I logged in my password was accepted, and I assume the authentication method was correct, though I haven't checked.

Do I need to wait for a new version of MySql with new scripts for Mojave, or is there anything I can do to get MySql installed?
