Yes, the update was carried out by a (now disabled!) nightly yum update.

As we're under pressure to get the service back up and running we haven't really got the time to play with going back to 8.0.15. Running in debug mode allowed us to dump the database, then rename the data directory, run mysqld --initialize, secure the installation, restart and reload the dump file.


All is now working again on 8.0.16 but we still have the failed data directory too if there's anything in there that might help you.
