Upgrade from 5.6 to 8 and also OS upgrade from RHEL7 ro 8

Hi All,

I am fairly new to mysql and generally have been able to find the answers I need, but I am stuck now. I am currently working on an OS from RHEL7.9 to 8.8 upgrade due to an application requirement.

The first question I have, is it recommended to upgrade mysql when moving to a new OS version or is it better to build a new system, install mysql and restore the database?

This application had 5.6.51 installed, so I first upgraded to 5.7 so that I could upgrade to mysql v8. I did get mysql to v8 and all seemed to be working. I then upgraded the OS to RHEL8.8 and the application still seemed to be working, but when I looked at the output from yum, it still shows el7 instead of el8. I have tried to upgrade it using the steps from https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/upgrading.html

If there is any documentation on upgrading the OS and mysql at the same time, please point me in the right direction. I am more than willing to dig for the answers.

Thank you,
Martin
