To upgrade from MySQL 5.7 (keyring file) to 8.4 (component keyring), first upgrade to MySQL 8.0, then enable the component_keyring plugin. Use keyring_migrate to transfer keys from the old keyring file. Once done, disable the old plugin and upgrade to MySQL 8.4. Always back up before starting.
