Repository issues with HTTP

We noticed today we get timeouts and can never install accessing the MySQL repos from Oracle linux. changing the URLS in /etc/yum.repos.d/mysql-community.repo to HTTPS seems to have fixed the problem, but i'm not clear why it was needed. Has anything changed at the MySQL end? I wanted to check before trying to determine if it is something on our network.
