Hi, I had the same problem. I think it is due to the fact that I configured the server
to use named pipes instead of TCP sockets.

In theory, mysql command line client first tries to connect using TCP sockets, and then, if this
fails, using named pipes.
For some reason this does not work, so you have to explicitly tell mysql to connect through
named pipes:

mysql -h . -u root -p

or

mysql --protocol pipe -u root -p

Another option is to copy 'my.ini' to your windows directory, so that it can be read by the
mysql client.
