Let me start by saying I'm a newbie to linux and MySQL

I have installed Fedora Core 3 and downloaded and installed the 4.1.10 Server,
Client programs, Libraries and header files and Dynamic client libraries MySQL packages. All seems to work ok up to this point.

When I try to go into mysql I get the message "cant connect to MySql server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock(2)"

Looking in this directory I can't see a mysql.sock file (is there supposed to be one).

I've read that it may be a permissions issue and have changed the directory permissions to the broadest available(chmod 777 mysql), but still no luck.

I'v tried the same on 4.1 with the same result

ANy assistance anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
