Hello,

for Debian users (personally I use Ubuntu).
I had no problems with MySQL 5.0.1 on RedHat (RH 7.3 and Fedora) and MySQL 5.0.3 on Ubuntu.
I got the same error yesterday on a fresh Ubuntu installation.
I used MySQL 5.0.4 binaries download from MySQL.com, then I installed MySQLdb for Python.
On a laptop with Ubuntu + MySQL 5.0.3 all was OK. With this one with Ubuntu + MySQL 5.0.4 -> error 2002.
It was due to an error of mine.
I discovered that I had installed via apt libmysqlclient10, libmysqlclient12, mysql-common and python-mysqldb.
After uninstalling all of them I re-installed MySQLdb for Python and all was Ok.
