I can see the argument towards the indexed field for the autoincrement... makes it easier to determine the next value if the field is already in memory... I like the fake-it idea, for Archive tables.

What am I doing with the ARCHIVE table? I'm storing accounting records for 300k subscribers' RADIUS records. A perfect implementation of ARCHIVE, IMHO: only inserts and the ocassional read. No updates, modifies, or deletes. So, I figured why waste the disk space on regular old MyISAM tables, and try ARCHIVE.
