Thanks for the extra info. If your query speed degrades that much as the number of rows in your table increases your queries are probably not using indexes as well as they could.

Can you run EXPLAIN SELECT on your queries and post the output please?

From the figures you've given and the hardware you have I can't see a problem getting the speed you need assuming the queries can be optimised.
