So 50% is too large a percentage, is it? I was thinking of a "large percentage" in terms of an exam, which would be 80% or 90%. If 50% is large, then I guess a "large percentage" of a table is compared to something like a tax rate.

No, I haven't benchedmarked it because I'm not certain how many records to expect. I believe it can probably get quite large, and every cycle counts, but my test data only has a couple of dozen rows. I'm not particularly interested in comparing performance figures, as I am in trying to understand how I can get indexes to work, and make sure my queries make the best of them.
