time for OPTMIZE TABLE and ANALYZE TABLE for Really Big Tables

is there some guidance online at mysql.com which gives rules for how long it takes to rebuild indexes for MyISAM or Innodb tables in the case of Really Big Tables? surely, it depends upon the type of index. is there anything like a partial index refresh available? even third party?

and i've seen these adaptive hash indexes for Innodb? anything quantitative on how they help? performance penalties on regular transactions?

thanks much.
