Performing multiple updates and selects

Using MySQL 5 with MyISAM.

I have 15+ tables, a few of them with 1.000.000+ rows. These tables are on two different databases on the same machine.

I am performing a (yearly) update job which does a lot of updates on these tables and this took 12 hours+ on the (slow) test machine.

I locked all the tables with WRITE locks before starting.

Question:
Is there a performance gain by doing all the updates on one table at the time? Now I do one (type of) update on all tables (on both databases), then move on to the next type of update.
