Can't recover deleted rows later. If you want to hang onto them, consider archiving / backing up / copying the table to somewhere else.

Rather than trying to learn Perl, perhaps you should just glance at the size every few days, and manually TRUNCATE when you decide to.

I am puzzled as to why you keep 2GB of data, only to casually toss it all. Why keep the data at all?
