This sounds like a bug. Please, report it at bugs.mysql.com.
Since EXPLAIN never finishes, it seems to be stuck in optimization phase. The query contains only left/right joins and no inner joins, so the join sequence is predetermined, and optimization should not take long.
By the way, I think the query would be easier to read and understand if it was rewritten to use only left joins and no right joins.
