I've just been reading up....whilst it still worries me that the optimiser gets something wrong that to me seems quite straightforward, there is an option i can use.
Select STRAIGHT_JOIN * from raceheader a, racedetail b where a.race_id = b.race_id
STRAIGHT_JOIN seems to force the optimiser to be ignored.......
Helps a little bit......
now if i can only get my "subqueries" to run before my main query i'll be a happy bunny.
