No need to file a bug report right now. I've notified Robin S of the scenario and the optimizer team will take a look at the post. It's a great example, though not sure if it has been previously reported to the optimizer team in other posts along similar lines. The optimizer team is putting much effort into subquery optimizations in 5.1 and 5.2 so this helps a bunch. Thanks, Beat!
