Great masses of files on database.

I am developing a medical application system. To develop it, I am using MySQL Server 4.1 as the database server....

On this application, a patient instance is related to some image and video files.

It would be very interesting to me that these files were stored on the database. But each patient instance would be related to about 25 files with 50MB each..

I need to know if all this data mass on the database will not make it become slow...

If not I also would like to know how could I declare these files on SQL... Should I use the blob type?
