I can't supply any reasons, although I'm seeing the same behaviour. In spite of saying that the encoding is utf-8, the behaviour suggests that the encoding is iso-8859-1 (from what is displayed in the query browser and what is selected if an entry is made directly in the query browser).
If you found a solution I would be glad to hear it.
