We try move away from fully static linked binaries for several
reasons, one being that they prevents the operating system maintainer
to let MySQL benefit from security updates in the system libraries.
Note that the x86 fully static binaries MySQL AB provides are built
against glibc 2.2, and a pain to build, often requiring to do patches
on the generated make files from automake.
As far as I know there are no plans to expand the set of fully
static linked binaries, but if you think there are strong
reasons to do so I suggest you file a feature request in
the bugs database at
http://bugs.mysql.com/
