Snow Leopard, compiling ODBC connector only?

Hi, on my Mac Mini Server I have mysql running, it is the preinstalled version.
It works fine, and I am able to connect from (for example) MySQL Workbench.

Now I would like to test connections from network computers through Python. I am trying with ODBC, so the first thing is (I think) to install the ODBC connector on my laptop. I am not really sure how to do this, though. All instructions I found on this suppose that I have mysql installed on the same computer where I am trying to install the connector. But I do not want to install the whole mysql on every client. I guess there must be some package containing only libraries and header files from 64 bit Snow Leopard. Are there some step by step instructions somewhere to set up the ODBC connector?

Thanks
Chris
